Friday July 18th Last night when we commenced to load the men truck for $1.00 per hour. We had been giving them 25% for day work and 35% at night. I as usual, surprised with them at 50¢ an hour. At 2:40 bus turned in for the first sleep he has had since we grounded. He turned out after two hours rest & started for Dettle Harbor on the Stella Maris giving me orders to proceed south to Red Bay 5 miles away & pick up our other ship then taken by the Schooners. We arrived at Red Bay 11:40 a.m. Then fog picked up we came fishermen & loaded all on board by 6:00 p.m. The Captain had given me his word that he would leave us soon as we were loaded. He refused point blank when the time came promising that the night worked be thick. The night was a beautiful one, clear and normal as I had predicted. So day the left. gave the men whiskey. Yesterday Mr. Newberry gave them a quart of rope whiskey. They have both been drinking.
