Friday December 4th 1914 Clear with light breeze South +5° Today was as near perfect as a winter day could be. There was almost no wind and what there was did not interfere with walking or working - and the big mirror was still with us. I found that I could not commence my studying at the same forced pace at which I left off. I shall have to get into the swing of the work again. Jesse worked all day on his weather piping in preparations for tomorrow's run. He was fortunate to have such pleasant weather - How say it is to talk about the weather! But what else is there to talk about? My thoughts are mostly on sky reading; philosophy, explosives, evolution etc. with a few dreadful anticipations of stiff collars and silk hats in the day or soon to come. Yes something new occurred today: I cooked some prunes. Heel came out this evening and spent several hours with us reading and talking. I treated him to a saucerful of the prunes which he was kind enough to appreciate. He brought news except of a new argument. The debate was over this interesting and in-structive subject: 'Proved that a man at the center of the earth always looks North (so long as his eyes are open)!!!' Neither Ed nor our men are back from the south -
