at the same time he gave Fitz other
orders to leave my party and press
on southward with the Expedition
mail in case he (Fitz) thought
that it desirable in order to reach
Upernivik in season for the Royal
danish mail. Fitz and the rest of
us considered [this conference took
place last evening] these orders in-
consistent and conflicting, and
he therefore stated in the presence of
Ekblaw, January, Peter and my-
self that he would disregard the
latter orders and proceed loyally
under me, since he felt sure
that in case of my becoming dis-
able and forced to advance
more slowly I would make ad-
equate arrangements for ad-
vancing the mail even to send-
ing all three of my associates
or in advance of me to Uper.
