April 1 warm & wind E. went after hawks but got none saw 2 red shouldered + 2 marsh + one Cooper's? Also saw white bellied swallow. Meadowlark grunts have increased and the goldfinch with them. Coming in P.M. April have been having a spell of bad weather, cold, raining, bleak. Birds at stand still. Watched a hairy wood pecker at work, sometimes 10 ft.. It is wonderful to see how they make the bark fly by di rect + sidewise thrusts. And what a help that tail is being projected against the tree during a forward motion when the body is raised it propels it forward when the feet are brought up to a new position. The most important one yet seen is two & of this species, he chased two female redstart limb to limb, with antic + race asking her if the sea-
