Joe Akpik came in about 6:00 and spent a couple of hours sitting with me - but without much communication. However, we did learn that his name means "Salmon berry" - Rubus Chaemamomus. Also found that coal mine operated primarily in winter, in a vein 8-10 feet thick. Coal blasted loose, then taken to hoist bucket by wheelbarrow. Coal taken to Barrow & bartered for food + supplies. Wainwright, although at equal distance, has its own coal mine. Snow finally changed to sheet - 4 or 5 inches during night.
