INDEX TO THE HERBARIUM
OF EDWIN B. BARTRAM (1878-1964)
Bartram's herbarium, destined for the Farlow since 1942, was transferred
from his home in Bushkill, Pennsylvania, to Cambridge in August 1964, four
months before his death. It consisted then of some 64,000 mounted specimens
and about 8000 packets of duplicates and unidentified specimens. In February
1964, a further lot of some 5000, mostly unidentified specimens, were disco-
vered and sent by his family. Some of the unmounted material has been added
to the herbarium and many duplicates have been distributed. The General
Herbarium at FH also contains many Bartram specimens, sent during his life-
time. Besides the holotypes of well over 2000 Bartram names, there are iso-
types from Brotherus, Fleischer, Cardot, Theriot, and other correspondents.
The herbarium is, of course, particularly strong in collections from Central
and South America, Malaysia and Hawaii, on which Bartram published major
studies, but a glance at the bibliography in Crum's memorial of Bartram
(Bryologist 69: 124-134. 1966) will show the breadth of his interests.
The original index to the herbarium was prepared by Richard Fralik,
under the direction of I. Mackenzie Lamb, in 1966-1967. Since then,
corrections and additions have been recorded by the curatorial staff as
addenda pages. The pages now issued incorporate all previous revisions. An
asterisk has been placed on the species lists at the point where these should
occur in the alphabetical arrangement. For this 1982 edition, the species
lists themselves have been re-read, typing and spelling errors corrected,
and names and authorities originally lacking or carrying a question mark
have been verified from the specimen labels. A number of Bartram types not
