the labels and implies no judgment or designation by us. Since the original index was prepared without benefit of most of the volumes of Index muscorum, many inconsistencies appear, particularly in the designations and abbrevia- tions of authorities. Bartram's association with the Farlow Herbarium was long, fruitful for both sides, and, except for an eight year hiatus, cordial, according to the Farlow directors' correspondence. He held an appointment as Honorary Curator of Bryophytes from 1937 to his death, and identified most of the major exotic collections received by the Herbarium during that period. He served on the editorial board of Farlowia during the life of that journal (1943-1955) and contributed to all but one of the volumes. The Farlow Herbarium received under his will, besides a major herbarium, 13 large portfolio boxes of letters to him and two boxes of other manuscripts. Even- tually, the Farlow will be the beneficiary of the remainder of his estate, the income from which he designated for a bryological curatorship. Geneva Sayre Research Associate
