Husted, Dayle N. 1964 52 October 15 --Today the sea was rough and the sky cloudy with squalls during the day. The number of birds seen were down from yesterday. Cook's Petrels were the main birds seen. Mottled Petrels were again seen. Several Leach's Storm Petrels were seen during the day. We shook up the boys at the weather bureau today. They had our area as a law pressure area with a law of 1012. We had 1018. They forecast gale winds. They radioed us and ranted and raved about our observations. Everything was correct and they had to change their low pressare area. The Sooty Shearwaters decreased to three and the Juan Fernandez Petrel decreased to four. Warren saw one Newell's October 16--The sea was moderate, calming this afternoon and evening. The sky was cloudy, more so this evening with rain squalls in the distance. The birds were fewer in numbers today. Cook's Petrels were the main birds seen. Mottled Petrels were also seen. They can be identified at a distance by their high arcing flight and smaller size than a Sooty Shearwater. Warren saw a Herold's Petrel this afternoon. Besides the color pattern he said it was between the size of a Cook's Petrel and a Dark-rumped Petrel. This evening I saw a Leach's Storm Petrel that seemed to be picking at something in the water. October 17--The sea was calm and the sky partly cloudy. Few bieds were seen today, and most of them were Cook's Petrels. A Newell's Shearwater and Mottled Petrel were also seen. Some Leach's Storm Petrels were also seen. No flocks were observed today.
