Huber 1964 Journal Jan 28 At sea Woke up last night to the sound of sooty turns. When I went outside most had already left but I could still hear about 8 of them. One that was calling, called a high pitched squeak (not a call). I was probably a young one but I not [illegible] sure because it didn't call while I was there. The night before last there were sooties around the ship also. Feb [1] Howland Is. Bandied 18 graybacks 6 Wandering tattlers 2 common moorhens 2 Sallanphone. 13 hundred sooty terns last night [illegible] (1300) Feb 2 Howland Is. Banded 7 grayback terns and 3500 sooties last night When we first approached the island on Jan 30 Saw 3 and maybe 4 storm petrels. (Lizko type) Less than a mile E of the Ir. On the night of the 1st Feb. Two storm petrels came aboard the ship but the sailors released them before me knew about them Saw a sooty tern incubating a turbine shell last night. Something still believe in miracles. (3507) Feb 4 Oaka Ir. There were a lot of turtles here. I suppose there is about 30 to 10 for the Island. They range from [illegible] 14 inches to full grown adults. Most are at the Windjacket surf.
