The river is a muddy red color. The banks or land is a verdant green growth of bushes & small trees. Heads of small white terms with black caps followed us noiseily up stream. At dusk we dropped anchor for the night some miles up the river. The navigation of the Hugly is very difficult owing to the constantly shifting current. (3) Our progress up the river in the morning was past small steamers & boats anchored in the stream. On either side a hundred yards away or so were the low green banks coveredly bushes, open palm & trees with a small village occasionally breaking the scrub.
