"marched into the [illegible] wharf
slowly + just as we made
for a heavy storm broke
& the rain descended
steadily for an hour, I stuck
to the ship for a time then
made a wild rush for a gharry
[the St. Eastern Hotel]. While
Drum [was riding my turn]
onto steamer & our allies
in the Indian army engaged in
a fist fight over nothing; a
friendly probe with a stick hit
at hands of one an expecter. They
we have civil war inside our
own regiments + some of the
officers were leaving Calcutta
at 8 P.M. & I saw them at
the station. One man had
served 10 months in France
then invalided to India &
enroute to Mesopotamia.
None of them spoke at length on
the german, but all were determined
to root them out + conquer.
