(13) The library of the
Museum has been my
center of interest. Calcutta
has made me realize what
a severe task the British
have in battling with the
delicate & governing it,
as well as exploiting India.
This place is extremely
moist & uninviting &
is no place for a
white man's home.
Nine months of heat &
moristure & only 3 cool
or bearable months give
Calcutta its hell. Of the
men here are largely bachelors
by necessity because British
women will not endure the
climate. The married men
are also virtually bachelors
for themselves at home with
the children in the hills!
