From the road + when
we could see the plains
spreading like a map wit
the Teesta River winding
than the plain + the green
terrain forest which borders
the hills rolling back,
spreading on in fans with
very few cultivated fields.
(18) Daylight dawned at
Santalaha where we changed
to the broad queue at 4.50 AM.
The trip thru the plains
was amid fields of jute +
rice in about equal proper
rations. At 8 a.m. we crossed
the Ganges over a steel bridge
a mile in length. The
river was muddy + swollen
but within its banks fleet.
With ship ended Bengali canos
some with square sails bet
