I visited the market 10 AM & found it in full bloom many like white, blue & silver. Different tribes were the chief component & I saw a Chinese man in evidence. No women with bound feet could be seen at this time as a few residents here in the market when summer approaches all the Chinese leave for the highlands to the north to avoid the malaria which is often fatal to them. Some of the tribes were easily recognized by their dress which was quite distinct from the universal blue John Chinese. The women of the tribes wore skirts & shoes & bare feet in marked contrast to the bound foot Chinese women. The men often exhibited tattoos on their thighs (in some cases as a girdle about their waists). The tattoos were very elaborate.
