be detected. Before 7 P.M., I had a new sort of spotted long carets species, with long hind legs, for jumping somewhat like like in general build & coloring. as well. During the afternoon I shot a gorgeous little sunbird having a violet tail yellow rump, & some dark greenish olive neck & an emerald gorget. A brilliant cardinal & black shrike was also secured. We have met several parties of Shaos & their caravans of mules & horses. Their women continued to have broad feet & the men are dressed in blue serge like the Chinese coolies. Only few gotten both Chinese to their villages are with Chinese resident as a rule. Nearly all of them carry muzzle loading percussion cap guns with short barrels, & doubt for defense rather than game gathering. The whole country on this Salween-Mekong divide is park like & very pleasant. The Shaos love rather pretty colors.
