at long intervals, we
met on the way parties of
Curie men & women carrying
loads of firewood. There were brass
gaynes jawed & strong cheeked
dressed Chinese in appearance
to a great extent at Pai-ga
in the canyons I saw many
Prospect holes & on showed
me prices showing green
copper stains & bright temples.
At lunch we stopped in a small
valley covered with fields.
The dunes marched right
large English walnut trees from
which the crop had been brought.
Before reaching San Chuan,
where camped we passed
down sandstone hills
yellow tumbleders of which
lined the road. The country
was inhabited & forested,
no snow mutes could be
seen in the distance.
