Our way led down hill & then we across along the Mulberry brook. The day was not cold early but later noon it was quite too warm. Villages appeared along the banks at 2 or 3 mile intervals. The little stream as we passed by many girls, children, parents rode all very ragged & dirty. I saw hawthorn hedges. Rice fields in narrow terraces occupied the available land near the villages. Apples ahead floated at each intersection. came up & returned at 3 P.M. & find the camp 2 hrs back near the river bank. Arriving the narrow road, an large pack much of the way had to be cut & a few places the road carried around projecting rocks. (19) A frost occurred last night but was clear & the day bright & warm from 10 AM to 4 P.M. We took tiffin at the river, sat with some farts when we secured ample oranges from several gums of trees. The marshmallows had very poor ones. These were indeed but frost is never heavy here.
