We camped at Nsiao-tien (little 200 plain) high above the mtn. Some 2,000 feet. There is deep ravine here with a heavy forest of oaks etc. to a stream. The soil is fine dark red clay mixed with red shale from which it is derived. A clump of bananas were growing here, the first we have seen. Their leaves were only slightly frost bitten. I saw me Empia near the bananas & a 5 number pheasant. 17 The night was warmer than any other mchwe had this month from frost fell. This place is 6,500 feet alt. buts, seems just among the hill as evidenced by the banana grove. I canight 2 or 3 new subjects: a large white belled rat, a large jubous bell, 3 spring + a black Micromus. There were Microtus jerue & springs (chelt) with traps also. The ravine here is deep & filled by broadwood trees leaves cheethy all with green leaves. 'The hills and spurs took cold, while pine was seen near the village with common grassman.
