5 The night was clear + wouldn't let us have much sleep. The troops received 2 boxes of 6 apotems + a large Epsilon (new) At 7:30 A.M. we continued our way down the river, the road running high above the valley floor & winding up each side ravine + down over the tributary streams. The valley is deep V-shape with vertical forms now & there hanging high above the river. In some cases the houses are built on such steep slopes that one side must be projected into dry posts. Daylight sunny but not hot. 6 We camped last night at the Yangtze at La-ma-foo Ferry. Our position was on a old terrace high above the river, near the village. The river here is wider & sluggish with a 2 mile current. Over the water was a grand view of the Gorge with the Sun Moon Range looming up on either side. This gorge must be about 800 or 900 feet deep. The river below clear with no rapids as far as we can see. There is a distinct light & shadow play + very deep the
