Six ridges for two miles, then from woods of pine, spruce their oak & hickory bearing acorns. Here people dwelt the ridge & only a rice field is told seen along intervals. Many wild flowers & bark grew on the ridge, we descended the ridge into a wild region deep ravines clothed by pine trees & rocks in which no house or fields were to be seen. Small birds were abundant at the road. A small squirrel was seen on two occasions. Day overcast but no showers occurred near us. The rolling hill country between Yuma - for & Cali- for is without big game except mountains & gray wolves in winter. The tiger, bear, large deer & sheep are quite unknown here.
