The trees had centuries ago been
out or burned off & the rain
had washed the whole
country in to washed red gullies.
The only vegetation was rice in
the valley where the soil
could not erode much. The
red sandstone foundation
with conglomerate frome
same color continued all day
with a few some streaks of white
clay & shale. In there is
one wide valley filled by
ripening rice fields. Beyond
the city the mountains rise
broken shoulders or falls of
gigantic size like the faults
or cliffs seen in the Grand
Canyon of the Colorado.
