Peter asked my advice as to his writing a letter to Mac about the matter, but I re- plied that I did not feel that I could advise him. Evidently doubt has been cast upon the story given out by Mac and Green. Would it not have been better to tell the truth about the event at first and stand by the necessity of what was done? Bad business anyhow and liable to cause severe criticism, if not serious trouble. 20 July. Thursday, Clear and cloudless or nearly so.
