(New Spec) (Also collected in Marcy's Expedition & on the Missouri in Nicollet's Expedition) They differ from the North American A. pallens Lem. which has the lower glume 1/3 longer than the flower & very slender awns, 7-8 inches in length. Fender 973. In some of the Specimens from the latter locality the upper glume is shorter than the flower. In all these varieties the palea is variable as to roughness; in some species it is glabrous except at the apex or in others it is strongly & even papillate. Scalorous in lines for the whole length.
