July 12 Boyle's Law: P1V1 = P2V2 P1 = pressure of the gas at volume V1 P2 = pressure of the gas at volume V2 If temperature and number of moles are constant: P1V1 = P2V2 Example: A sample of gas occupies 500 mL at a pressure of 760 mm Hg. What will be the pressure if the volume is changed to 250 mL? Solution: P1 = 760 mm Hg V1 = 500 mL P2 = ? V2 = 250 mL P1V1 = P2V2 (760)(500) = P2(250) 380,000 = 250P2 P2 = 380,000 / 250 P2 = 1520 mm Hg Answer: The new pressure is 1520 mm Hg. Note: This law applies only when temperature and amount of gas remain constant.
