TYPE OF: Trip to Florida-Ala.-Ga. S., M. Carolina-March 1941 With Geo. W. Darrow Vol. 305

Vol. 305 3/24/41 Creek River, Yar. Observed: 1. australe 2. mycinite 3. Elliottii 4. tenellum 5. ambogenum. Also-Ellioti with glandular twigs. All in one area with the following,

"Aurea" is a shrub to 5 ft spreading by stolons to make a bushy growth. Elliotii is variable in stem pubescence. Also here the "australis" with glands on lower surface of leaves plants. One tall (5 ft) with small pub. fla.

This seems to have a lot of myrrh in it and the younger plant the leaves were persist. XX

Liberty Co Ga. near Midway. - low swampy area. D. Elliottii to 8 ft. D. amoenum 4 1/2 ft. on dry slope above. D. tendellum 1 1/2 ft. here also was the glabrous leaved glandular form 3 ft. No australe seen. here Elliottii wa bottlebrush + pubes leaved. * * *

at village of midway. @ @ Elibitii not very short of Elibitii have bee. glands on leaves - xxx Low growd near midway. 1 myrsinhe. 2 arbanannum 3) 7 ft. + a series of sub waygen gland & non gl. intermedi also pub + non pubesc.

X May 20. Note after looking over plantation 8 mi north of Brunswick, Ga. The whole lot - 10 acres - said to have been dug up along the Ogeechee River about 1929 - 27 +/- from the well. Later many of the small fruited forms were eliminated, but many remain. Of the large fruited forms, these seem

"To be dominated by V. australis altho several broad leaved" amoenum were present, A few with pubescent leaves and subglauces (Fredson said dark) fruit. These were tall ranging to 16 ft. or more and seemed to be very close to V. asbandanum. There seldom over 3 ft underground runners

The antherum here was very similar to that seen earlier along the Agaweechee. Plants 3 to 4 ft, flo fairly large, pink, non-glaucous hypanthium, with bluffist hairs on mid + lateral veins, and glandular. A marked character was the very strong suckering from long runners. Darro says this is characteristic of the "Rabbiteye" (12-15 pthry)

But the big surprise was the half small flowered, intricate floridged forms; the calyces indicated that the fruit would be glaucous; the leaf was glaucous + generally glabrous, looking like a smaller than typical austral. Barrow says there are diploid and the

source of re report of diplod [illegible] Elliptii! So this may be the source of the Curiously variable Cuthbertii !!! See previous note & look for it up the Ogeechee & Savannah Rivers!

Looking back over the N. Car. Elliottii + the "swamp" Elliottii in Ga. it would seem that they are different in flower size + stem texture - also their general habitat is different; on dry uplands in N Car as follows in Ga. The contamination with Outubellus may be the reason for the difference in Georgia.

It is to be noted that the twigs in Georgia are hard to determine green shoot the plants are intimately wiggly. Note on wild population back at Fred's place, a low area with a few sandy rices. On the drier area, v. myrsinites was

Common - tree 16-15 inches high. On shale in woods to as much as 3 ft. On the lower or more bricky spots was a pink flowered form was 3-6 ft high with but evergreen to deciduous leaves. When evergreen they were narrow (of the fuscatum type) to broader

then approaching the Holoptychus type. A few had glands, mostly were pubescent and scabrid when seen glabrous & with glands. Darrow says that it was from this material that the diploid material which he tried cults reported to me from Ya came from this series, but which plant?

I am very suspicious that these two myosins in this mammal - in spite of the 2 - 4 ploid difference, but the glands of Ellington vs cathetus are a case in point. ! * *

note: we have not seen a single stick of authentic [illegible] since the Ogeechee River and then it may have been Cuthbert's but I think it was OR. * *

Mar 21. Along South Brunswick River Georgia. Present 1 Myrsinite in pubes form to 2 ft. (generally 1 1/2). 2 glandless fuscatum. to 10 + ft. Also a complex. 1. tall subungreen (at apex of sports) with + without glands and + pubescent + ungre

"Half high" much the same some glab, some pub - some glabeld some not gland. 3 Some stooled, some made big colonies - upto 50 ft. across.. In short all possible sorts of segregation. after x

Here myronis was mostly glabrous but see plants with extreme pubescence on twigs also had a line of pubescence on mid vein. X X At 13 mis. of Brunswick, Much the same system of variants, but here a suspected haploid.

it was a tall shrub 9 ft, + and spreading by stolons to 18 ft.+ The buds were late. The leaves were pectinate pub. and quite glandular. hyposth? non gland? buds sent to Belleville also plant taken. X X X

north of Nassau River deciduous + non decid Myrsinites, both in large clears - the [illegible] deciduous form at least 150 ft across. Actually, the potentiality of a clump size is unlimited in Myrsinites. + +

D. of Narsan in swamps. -at edge of swamps & wpld swa. Myrcinite, A swamp the tall Rairy, non gland. Jusdatum - also the glandular pub - the sparsely put - gland; + glott. glands, large beaked jordan.

These plants often have Coriaceous leaves. X X X

St John's Along [illegible] River Just N of Switzerland.. along arm of Indian River - south side and west of road [illegible] (State Route 47). Here a great collection of V. amoenum, forming a nearly solid my drubush under holly, magnolia, etc., etc. - hundreds & hundreds of plants, some in large

cooling clumps up to 30 ft across and 16-12 ft high. As far as leaves were concerned they were mostly typical with the obovate/ovale form beginning to show - and prone to come as growth progressed. The pubescence was somewhat variable, yet none were completely glabrous - and the glands were always obvious.

The corollas were the long-narrow outfired type - and in shade white and almost red in sun; on the sprouts, the prevailing color over the masses being pinkish. Where cut and burned regularly along the road, the stooling clumps were at a decided advantage, and here only 1 1/2 to 2 ft. high, or higher.

These plants do not stool! faces in the upper side of the leaf is the lower surface densely pubescent. Note: on the upper sprout stems the leaves were the narrow type of the "type" - this is especially true of the low plants after being cut a period! Myromites was present but no "abnormals" seen. ***

On St Augustine. Here a negro who knew better, a great deed told of the tall forms and low forms. A few of the talls

from the Ogeechee River - as well as the troublesome forms nearing wild on the Catochee - and this river heads up toward the Wadley country - So thus, how the source of the flint Edictu? X *

March 22 After seeing the meze around Illinois of Glory & Craigways Hyssop head which is Myrosinits x fuscatum and sequestris. (= traceyi in part) I feel that Lee (in part @ fuscatum as a tetraploid or 2) this is a diploid myrosinites

On this area it is quite certain that a forest or papyrusite have crossed. Adnot: Can fire cause polyploidy?

March 22 at Gainesville Fla. From St Augustine back to Switzerland, over Rt 1 & back to St Aug. - south, and across a sand road with curves to Palatka - thence to Gainesville. On the whole region there seems to be but two species - myrsinita, and fuscatum.

But the many variants seem only to be a series of hybrids + segregates. Where sufficiently protected from fire, Mysoreite seems to go to 4 1/2 ft or even higher (3), but in burned over areas it is only 1-1/2 ft. with an enormous rhizome system and clumps with some "walking" character,

- color of leaf, shape or glandular of glypantins being up to 50 for even more across. And I have yet to see a seedling. It is also obvious that the "evergreen" fuscatum is quite often a phenomenon of the top branches - where of course the collectors "work"

March 23 at Tallahassee, Fla. Fuss of the tall bushes, firecactus has dominated all across Florida, this of course, in the swamp areas. And - as usual - where it comes - or once came into contact with myrsinita they crossed. Now if myrsin

is always tetraploid. This would indicate that Juncatus is tetraploid (or ought to). It was not swampy enough along the Suwanee River where we crossed for Juncatus but here there was plenty of Elliottii x and subgenus, but no evidence of mixing.

The swamps of the Fenholme way were a gold mine. Ampelothamnus ! and myrsinitis -also myrsinitis var glandulosa. The war, as usual was glandless. From the color of the plants it seemed that the two crossed freely. But also here were all sorts of

crosses x combination with fuscatus x myriophyllum. The swamps of the Confined River valley held a surprise - What seemed to be crosses between fuscatus and Elliottii.. What does this mean? Arthaea diploid and tetraploid phases of Elliottii?

Or do we have Juncation 4n and atavocam 2n both in Florida? These messes - both in the Fenholloway and Econfinia Lake had set too much fruit to suppose that we were dealing with anything but straight diploid and tetraploid complexes - they did not seem to

react as I imagine a triploid should -unless Vaccinium should prove to be messier than I had supposed. -actually I think that fusculin 4m and atroccocc 2m are present. how to tell them apart?

Wabulla Co Fla Mar 24, just north of Sopchoppy. Here fuscolute x @ Clivii is (A) pubescent flake. (B) glaucous phase etc. etc. also mysin var. glauc was common and mysinit (gladula) was rare. Clivii was in

the drier sand phase with the myosinili whereas the fascati held to the swamp areas. Further along Myrosin (cens str) dropped out and the legladula forms only was seen. It seems to be a taller, more spreading thing than straight myro. - also it

is my impression that it does not form so large a close as the regular species. But still the fuscation X complex continued. Then toward evening we line clung — an enormous thing, — near Portland, Waltha Co. — The first Rashet eye, etc

was a striking thing 14 ft tall with red buds, the flowers turning pink- the two pale-sat- glancous -a plant standing to a distance of 20ft. Search was made at Picewell for V. Ashei but now was seen.

Notes on Rabbiteye.

Notes while talking to Hagood. Notes on Rabbety. "There are rabbeteye near Evergreen Conceub Co. Alab." Yell River turds in Courgin Co near opp First word apparent. Hagood says he first heard of it in "Holm's" County near Holmes, Washington Co Lincoln. Holmes Creek, Fla.

"He said above Venn-- This is in Washington. "Most abundant Yellow river valley;" "Most abundant in the old rice plantings, abandoned at the time of the Civil War." "Some as single trunk but most do not; they come from the roots"

The term Rattiteye, Rev. H.H. Hagood, Crestview, Fla. March 25, Further notes, At the large field near Bakers. - 35 acres and estimated 30,000 plants. All dug up along the Yellow River in Fla. and brought in some 15-18 years ago. It appears that the original roots were seldom split into

more than 2 - 3 parts so that there were probably not less than 10,000 plants involved in the area. They were remarkably variable - but within limits. Some were tall - up to 15ft, others really not more than 3ft. (but these rare). Some had red deep pink or nearly red flowers - other pink and many were white. There were some

variation in the color of the hypanthium. all to they tended toward sub-glaucous. Danon & Poyard say some are black - many with a slight bloom, and a few blue. So far as leaves are concerned, they too were variable. Allto young - they showed their characters. The shape of the 3rd & 4th was free - dominately oblanceolate,

and basally cuneate, with the midlitt pubescent - sometime with the anguleum type of pubescence, but often reduced and occasionally lacking. Only rarely were the lateral pubesc. Almost universally they were glandular, but rarely these were rare or lacking - at least on the two examined (the youngest).

One plant had the large pepsili glands on the catuals. But the one thing which seemed universal was the glancesome (bloom) which rubly off. Some of the plants were strict - others spreading with contorted branches. The majority sucked and stood freely altho some had

main trunks. Hagood mentioned that some Rabbitays had main trunks and maintained them - but that the majority were sucker'd and did not sprout from the original trunk - or if do only with weak branches. This sucker's habit is typical of Amorpha!

In short put Arseenum + Aystral Togethers and the result would be Rabbiteye - of course some sort of ploidy would have to come in. - and it seems to have, for all reports are that Rabbiteye is hexaploid. Austral is tetraploidy - does this make Arseenum diploid?

It points that way, but we do not know as yet. It did not seem to cross with the tetraplo Myrsinite s. of St. Augustine so maybe!! In George Co-bla. U Myrsinite, var. glaucum is called Daphleberry.

Have decided (?) To call them the Pale & Shining Yophiberries.

March 16- The search for Rabbiteye continued. From Andalusia to Greenville, to Laurens, Brantley - on the back roads to Opp - and across the Yellow River valley ad eastward I put no Rabbiteyes. So it must be south of Opp where it starts, at least to be abundant.

"But the "glandular leaved - Ellirita" = Outiberia seem to be more common than expected. It is a more suckering plant than Elliriti. Also near Whigban Brady Co Da. suspected Fuscet X myos. vaglana. 16 mi E. J Veldsto Da. was the first mysrmite.

Mar 27, 3 mi E of Valdosta Ga. Here in one small area - 2 acres or less was found 1 Myrmex 2 M. var glaucus 2a + intermediates 3. Fuscatum, 4 Australe (1 book) 5 Fusc x aust.

(6) fuscatum x angustatum. (7) Albansanum. (8) atrocoecum. (9) Elliottii like"atrocoecum Is it possible that Elliottii has been submerged under atrocoecum? or was quite small field? also - what is fuscatum - is it

only arkananum x a little myositis? "The big map" would indicate that this is so -- for then were no sweat unless myxo is present, 15 mi, 2, at alpaka River again / australo plant. ad the arist x arkanan x myssin = fasc. ores.

R Lloyd Scott. Blackshear Ga. A collection of about 1000 plants colon from uhwild. There collected on Billy's Island (a Hambrock), in the Okafenskee; along the Satilla River, near Blackshear & maycross, and along St Marys River, Charlton Co.

ca. ca 10 miles of Homeland, gd a mile or from the road toward the river. The whole mess was selected mainly to be for glabrum flavus - which Scott said marked this "blue berried form." But also, there was there perfectly good amoenum with black fruits.

The Satilla River Coef had a lot of tall high natural - often spreading & twiggy, lots - many LW tight find - which I suspect is the Real vegetation. But some - a few only were.

Of the other plantings, they were, of course, variable - but the whole lot tended strongly toward Australis. The deeper pink flo were characteris- of amoenus- and a few were very intense (lute)- so I suspect that fuscatum was

involved. In short, having selected for blue fruit, the fulk were aust X amber - but some aust X ameen X (arh) fuse were also fluid and take:-

The Satilla R. "virgatum" way had been a Tenelbum & australis segregate, with perploidy for without} ##

However in an upland swamp just outside of Waverly - was a real mess. of the recognizable species: 1 Tenellum. 2 Myosotis. 3 A. bistrata. 4 arhansana 5 atrocoerulea It seemed that the diploids were [illegible] mixed - as were

the tetraploids. The trouble is, I can't see a way to segregate the dwarfish tet x atrov from the deciduous myrs x arb. by flowers, with only small leaves present. But the whole group had smallish fls.

About 3.7 mi S of Weldon Halifax Co N Car. on hill. Here apparently pallida & terella have come together to produce a mess - also with some pubescens forms live due mean that a little atroc has gotten loose in this population.

really /6.3 15 mi.s. of Petersburg, Va. Tall (6ft. glabrous leafed form which seemed to hybridize with 1) atrosocc 2) Torreyann. Is this the ? in austral? The loss on ground were fairly large. Junctin point with 301 - 35 - 5.5 mi. south, in rolling hills with quandup on sags.
