C. G. Loren Station, Sand Island, Johnston Island Atoll
August 5, 1963
Typed Progress Report and mailed it. Ken Wilz and Ken Amerman finished the banding reports (up through August 3). Approximately 3000+ color markers came in the noon mail. Also a letter from Fred. We began to cut the markers for use tomorrow. Six to ten thousand more color markers came late in the afternoon along with another letter from Fred. Still no response from Maryanna or Phil. Also no word on the dry ice shipment. Lt. Hayes called Honolulu by Ham radio and checked on Ken Wilz and my plane flight back to the mainland at the end of this month. Checked Wedge-tailed Shearwater.
August 6, 1963
Banded thirteen hundred adult Sooty Terns today using hand nets. Had to cut some more color markers at noon to have enough. After supper we all cut some more markers for tomorrow's use. Filled out band recovery forms for four birds recovered here. Typed these up and made carbon copy. Received two ice chests and letter from Bob.
August 7, 1963
Banded eight hundred adult Sooty Terns today. Took adult and immature Sooty Tern blood samples this afternoon. Took samples from Wedge-tail Shearwaters and partial lot of Woddies after dark. Tried some mice but was unsuccessful. Cut more color markers for tomorrow. Wrote letter to Fred answering some of his questions and sending list of bands on hand. Moon not coming up until 10 or 10:30.
