C. G. Loran Station, Sand Island, Johnston Island Atoll The Bristle Thighed Curlew was not seen today. Either it has gone to Johnston Island or migrated elsewhere. Total birds banded today--eight hundred two. Received message saying, "Pat and Ken stay on Sand--info to follow. August 3, 1963 Today we went all out in banding Sooty Terns. Pat and I did seven hundred while the Ken's did five hundred--total twelve thousand banded today. Hand nets were used exclusively. I reduced the Sand Island map so it would fit on to field notebook paper. An outline for the progress report was drawn up during the evening. August 4, 1963 Coast Guard Day--cook-out and free drinks. Finished Progress Report draft. A total of 6224 birds were banded during its period (July 21-August 3), giving a grand total of 8866 birds banded at Sand Island since July 7th. The list on the following page shows the number of each species banded plus the grand total. Approximately 5000+ birds have been color tagged also.
