May 16, 1955, Pope Beach, S end, Lake Tahoe, Eldorado Co. Calif. 1:30-4p.m. PDST. Still threatening weather, but end of several weeks of serious storms. Eared Grebe - M's - 75, F-6 White Pelican - 26 Common Egret - 3 Black-crown Night Heron - 3 Bittern - 1 Canada Goose - 8-9 pair. Mallard - 3M, 10 pair, and F on down-lined nest w/ 12 eggs in pine clump - 3' high. Pintail - 2 pair. Cinnamon Teal - 6 pair Lesser Scaup - 1M Bufflehead - 1 pr. Common Merganser - 17M and 6 F or immrs Old Squaw - Juvenile. Rode low to water - generally grayish-white appearance. Brownish wings and back. White sides and below. White sides showed on straight-away flight followed by run for takeoff of about 30'. Watched for 5 min. or so at 75' w/ 7X binocs in sunshine. Bill short and sloped, with yellow-orange with black tip and base. Head round - white front/ and sides/ gray below, gray-brown on top, and and gray below with black-brown area large on jowls and around base of head onto neck. Appeared somewhat larger than eared grebe M's that joined it. Tail short. Silent on water and in flight. Vulture - 2 Red-tailed Hawk - 1 Sparrow Hawk - 3 Coot - 3 Killdeer - 7-8 Spotted Sandpiper - 4 Western Sandpiper - 42 Northern Phalaropes - 250-300 Wilson Phalaropes - 15-20 Calif. Gulls - 27-30 Forester's Tern - 60-65 Black Tern - 25-30 Mourning Dove - 2 Kingfisher - 1 Red-shafted Flicker - 1 hot springs Pewee - 2 ret - 2 Tree Swallow - 40-45 Barn Swallow - 4 Rough-winged Swallow - 15 Cliff Swallow - 50-75 Black-billed Magpie - 1 Mountain Chickadee - few Marsh Wren - 1 Robin - 60 Shrike - 1 Yellow Warbler - 1M pair. Audubon Warbler - 8-10 Pileolated Warbler - 2 Meadowlark - 8 Yellow-headed Blackbird - 4M Redwings - 2 types Brewer Blackbirds - 30- F w/ nest material White-crowned Sparrows dozens of pairs - nests in all stages from complete to fresh pink Song Sparrows black-skinned young to nearly fully feathered young; all active nests checked were in sagebrush at 6' to 9-foot heights. Mud-filled and lined with clean dry grass. Cup 6-8" wide and 5-6" deep. Banded many. Bush-tit - nest in sage at 6½' height - 3 eggs left in nest. Saw several of them. Mountain Bluebird - 2 Shrike - 1
