Forests, Pope Beach and marsh, and wet meadows included. Western Grebe - 1 White Pelican - at least 9 seen on and over Pope Beach Marsh. Bittern - 2 at Pope Beach marhh, heard pumping occasionally both days. Canada Goose - at least 6 adults seen at marsh. None flying. Mallard - all paired up - several dozen pairs seen. Pintail - 2 ad. males at marsh. Cinnamon Teal - 2 pairs seen. Redhead - 1 male Common Merganser - 15-18, mostly males, for only 4 F or imm. male plumages seen. Vulture - 2 Goshawk - 1 full male took a yellow-headed blackbird at the Pope Beach Marsh at 5 p.m. It and others set up terrific commotion. The hawk carried the bird directly west across marsh to pine forest. Red-tailed Hawk - 2 Sparrow Hawk - 1 dull plumaged one lit on ground in pasture and was mobbed by BBB's. Mountain Quail - 2 near Lily Lake. Coot - several at Pope Meach Marsh. Killdeer - several Spotted Sandpipers - at least 9 individuals seen, 4 in one group. All adults. Willet - 5 seen Avocet - 4 adults at mouth of Little Truckee R. in Pope Beach Marsh. Calif. Gulls - several dozen ad. and imms. Black Tern - 18-25' over Pope Beach Marsh. Forster Tern - 1 Mourning Dove - 1 pair Red-Shafted Flicker - few Pileated Woodpecker - 1 full male at Lily Lake. Much digging sign about lake. Williamson Sapsucker - several Red-breasted Sapsucker - common White-headed Woodpecker - in evening, near Argante's cabin. one drummed quite steadily on heavy snag in forest area, 7-8 p.m. Western Flycatcher Hammond Flycatcher Wood Pewees common Violet-green Swallow Tree Swallows in and out of nest holes in aspen at Lily Lake. At Pope Beach Marsh I watched attempts at their catching dragon fly. Would take hold, and let go, and try again. Barn Swallows - common at boat house - few elsewhere. Cliff Swallows - about marsh Stellar Jays - few Black-billed Magpies at marsh Clarke Nutcrackers on ridge near Mt. Tallac. Mountain Chickadees -common and some courting Red-breasted Nuthatches common White-breasted Nuthatches - some Brown Creepers - several seen, and many heard. Robins common Hermit Thrushes - several at Glen Alpine Lodge and about lake in forests. Mountain Bluebirds along marsh and Pope Beach.
