June 9, 1950, Putah Sinks area, Yolo Basin, SW of Sacramento, in Yolo Co. 1200-1600 PDST. Putah Creek and most Scirpus and Juncus area dry, with just 2 or 3 drying ponds in area. Rice inundated near Yolo Causeway. Farallon Cormorants - 3 Blue Heron - about 2/acre on rice. American Egrets - 1 for every 20 blue herons seen. Black-crowned Night Heron - in rice. Cackling Canada Goose - 5 on mud bar at edge of one Putah Sink. Lesser Canada Goose - 2 along wet bottom of Putah Creek channel. White-fronted Goose - 4 with the Cacklers. Mallard - about 35 pairs seen. Several broods of 6-9 young seen. Gadwall - 1 pair Baldpate - 1 female seen. Pintail - about 25 seen in one bunch, and 9 more in another. 1 female with 7 young. Cinnamon Teal - about 5 pair and 3 extra full males seen. Shoveller - 2 male and 1 female Vultures - many scattered and 11 flushed from one white oak. White-tailed Kite in willow-cottonwood area along Yolo By-pass canal. Marsh Hawk - several seen and 1 F flushed from freshly killed ½-grown pheasant. Eaten. Valley Quail heard Pheasant - 5 crowing/sq. mile in by-pass area. Coot - 2 and 18 seen. Wilson Snipe - 1 flushed from edge of pond. Avocet - 1 seen Black-necked Stilts - 18 pair in rice Forester's Terns - 9 Black Terns - about 27 seen. Mourning Doves Western Kingbirds - 2 pair on fence lines 1/2 mile from sink area. Ash-throated Flycatcher - 1 pair/ mile of Yolo By-pass ditch in willow, etc. Ruddy Horned Larks very common Tree Swallows Cliff Swallows Western Crows California Bush-tits. Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wrens Pacific Yellowthroats in Typha-Scirpus areas. Western Meadowlarks Yellow-headed Blackbirds Calif. Bicolor Redwings Tricolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds Cowbird - 1 full male in top of small cottonwood alongside Yolo By-pass ditch. Common Goldfinches Modesto Song Sparrows
