Aug. 29, Fern Ridge continued: Sora Rail - 2 adults were flushed in the cattail marsh area of the NE dike. Coots - quite common in small groups around the water. Killdeer - scattered ones, and some in with small flock of Leasts. Wilson's Snipe - flushed one from swampy grass area. Spotted Sandpiper - on the Long Tom R. below the dam. Yellowlegs - both Bob and I heard one call, but neither was successful in spotting the bird. Least Sandpipers - small flocks of 5-25 birds common whereever we flushed them in the south end marshes. Western Gulls - 2 or 3 immatures seen over the water area. Mourning Doves - scattered pairs or small groups here and there. -Violet-green Swallows and -Barn Swallows were the only species observed. Common in mixed adult and young flock Seattle Wren in brushy areas. -Tule Wrens - scolding and also singing and otherwise quite noisy, and tame. -Cedar Waxwings - here and there. Warbling Vireo immatures feeding in pear tree Audubon Warbler in fencerow -Pacific Yellowthroat - quite a few in the brush areas. Purple Finches Willow Goldfinches common in small groups in most of farm areas, with other species, Green-backed Goldfinches quite rare. Brewer Blackbirds common in small grougs and flocks up to 50 or so. Vesper Sparrows in grass area with Goldfinches and Chipping Sparrows Juncos - a few Chipping Sparrows - flock of 15-20 with Goldfinches and Vespers in grassland area. Song Sparrows. A ugust 29, 1947, Glenbrook, and vicinity, Benton Co. 415-5 p.m. Vultures circling over Band-tailed Pigeons - on one oak hillside were over 40 birds in the tops of the oaks, and they flew across the field to another wooded area. Pileated Woodpecker in D. Fir area. Lewis Woodpeckers - several seen perched in oaks, and on snags, and flying. Coast Jay Long-tailed Jay W. Bluebirds hovering over field at 5 feet & -Audubon Warbler Pacific Yellowthroats in fence rows, brush, etc. Western Tanager heard in D. Fir area. Willow Goldfinches common, most in partial/ plumage. White-crowned Sparrows in flock of 15 or 20 in Blackberry patch and pasture area. August 29, 1947, Bellfountain to Greenberry Jct on Philomath Road, 515-615 p.m. Pacific Nighthawks flying and calling here and there Pileated Woodpecker in D. Fir area. Lewis Woodpeckers - over a half dozen seen. One flew to a tall snag where a Gairner Woodpecker was in the top, and circled 4 times before finally flying in and bluffing the smaller bird from the perch, after which it circled once more and alit on the snag. Gairdner-Woodpecker on top part of tall bare snags. Violet-green, Tree, Barn and Cliff Swallows in southward-moving flocks over this north-south running ridge. Coast Jay Bush Tits - flocks working some scrub oak along the road.
