MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, 14 miles south CORVALLIS, OREGON March 13, 1949 9:30am to 12:30 pm. Weather - Low clouds. Intermittent FAI light rains. Water level - 6½. Little water on north field. Just soggy. Area covered - All ponds and north field looked at. Blue Heron - At least two which went here and there. First in main pond Canada Goose - 3,000 or more in area. Mallard - About 800, mostly in ponds south of road and in main pond. All paired up. Pintail - Only a few mostly males. About 20. Green-winged Teal - About two large flocks of 300 each flew out of main pond. Wood Duck - Heard one while we were in brush along Muddy Cr., but didn't see it. Bufflehead - one female or imm. male on main pond at south. Wilson's Snipe - walked along fence from corner to junction of main swamp outlet. Flushed about 30 of them. Coot - 100 Horned Lark - one singing. in field. Violet-Green Swallow - only saw one for sure. Were undoubtedly more. Tree Swallow - About 50 of them. They lit in dead ash tree. Crow - several flew over Oregon Chickadee - head one. Tule Wren - one singing. Don't believe tule wrens are as numerous as last year. Robin - only about 2. Varied Thrush - heard one singing. Audubon Warblers Red-wings. Males showing off there red shoulder patches today. Golden-crowned Sparrow - Betty spotted this one. Was alone in brush at turn in road when we first hit the swamp. The usual flock of golden-crowns in the rose just south of the horse shed has not been [illegible] seen by us this year. Song Sparrow - about 7. D.B. Marshall
