McFadden's Swamp - March 5, 1949 - 13:30 to 17:00 69°, calm, spring-like day with scattered cumulus clouds. With the exception of the waterfowl and the others noted, all the birds were seen along the swamp road on the west side to its terminus in the foothills. Mallard - several hundred pairs scattered over the swamp. Baldpate - 1 m. with Green-winged Teal just east of Bruce. Pintail - 14 pair on the north end of the swamp. Green-winged Teal - 9 on a small slough in a field eastoff Bruce. Ruddy Duck - 1 m. in the main channel of the swamp with bright white cheek patches nd black crown, but no red. Coot - 25 Ring-necked pheasant - 3 cocks in fields on west side, one crowing on west side. R. S. Flicker - 3 Golden-crowned sparrows-four large flocks encountered along brushy road-side. White-crowned Sparrows (Gambels or Puget Sound?) - mixed in with the flocks of Golden-crowns in small nos. Horned Lark - two singing in fields Tree Swallows - 4 over the swamp Calif. Jay - one in tree at side of road. Raven - large flock intermixed with crows. They were all soaring over an oak covered ridge. After an hour, this broke up and the ravens separated. 28 counted as they flew towards the hills. Before disappearing, though, they hit an updraft and soared upwards nearly out of site. Played together in this current for half-an- hour, soaring around in wide circles and engaging each other in aerial combats. Vulture Crows - flock of 30 with the ravens. Oregon Chickadee - 1 calling Seattle Wren - 2 singing Winter Wren - 5 along woods trail in the Douglas fir. Wester Robins - flock of 40 flew over. Hermit Thrush - one in brush along road Audubon's Warbler - 6 Meadowlark - 12 Red-winged Blackbirds - none at swamp. All out in the fields with the Brewer's. Sing ng. Brewers Blackbirds - two flock of 30 Oregon Towhee - a pair Vesper Sparrow - one singing at at edge of field on the slope of the foothills.
