Sparrow Hawk Ring-necked Pheasants - 8 Coots - 700& Short-billed Gulls - near the river Ring-billed Gulls - near the river Band-tailed Pigeons - about 30 flew over Flicker - several Violet-green Swallow - 1 Tree Swallows - 150-200 Cliff Swallow - 1 Interior California Jay Western Crows American Pipits Audubon Warblers Bicolor-Redwings - some males displaying their epaulets. March 5, 1949, Bass Lake, and vicinity, 1100+, NE of Clarksville on U.S. 50. 1215-1245. 15 Brkn. SE 3-8. The lake is a shallow basin in open country - just grass. Within a mile is oak woodland, and digger pine, as well as chaparral. Pied-billed Grebe-1 Canvasbacks - about 90 resting with bills tucked underwing, but as wind came up from the SE, they began to spread out, and feed, showing activity. Lesser Scaups - 30, mostly males Ruddy Ducks - 30 - only 2 full males. Vultures - several seen, and one group of 5 circling low together. Red-tailed Hawks utilizing up-currents along N-S ridges, hovering in one spot. Saw one perched on top of an oak, while another was high above, doing love-dives. Marsh Hawk - F 200/ Sparrow Hawk Coots - about 300 Killdeer-3 Band-tailed Pigeons - about 40 flew over California Woodpecker - 1 on pest beside the road. Black Phoebe Say Phoebe, 2 Violet-green Swallows, 15-20 Tree Swallows, 5 Yellow-billed Magpies. Western Crows, Robins feeding on the ground, Western Bluebirds in small groups. W. Meadowlarks, Sacramento Brown Towhees, Oregon Vesper Sp., and Oregon Juncos.
