Crows - flying over Oregon Chickadee flocks Red-breasted Nuthatch Slender-billed Nuthatch California Creeper W. Winter Wren on trunk of ash tree, moving over it in creeper-like manner. Rose Varied Thrush - several Ruby-crowned Kinglets - common goldencrowned Kinglets Audubon Warblers Oregon Towhees Song Sparrows Killdeers and Meadowlarks in farm fields. Sparrow Hawks on wire lines. December 29, 1948, just south of Los Molinos, Tehama County, 1130 a.m. 3 Ovc, RW- American Egrets - common Lesser Canada Geese - flock of 37 flew over Lesser Snow Geese - about 150 in 3 small flocks Red-breasted Sapsucker working Eucalyptus in open cropland area Say Phoebe - on wire fence in open cropland Yellow-billed Magpies - several on ground, etc. W. Crows flying over California Shrike - on wire lines W. Meadowlarks common California Bicolor Redwing Blackbird Brewer Blackbirds. December 29, 1948, Grey Lodge Refuge, Butte Co., 1-3 p.m. 80 Brkn, 5 Scta. Calm. Pied-billed Grebe - White Pelicans - about 30 seen in with geese and ducks Farallon Cormorant - just 3 seen. Great Blue Heron - several Common American Egrets very common Snowy Egrets - just 3 seen. Black-crowned Night Herons - still a winter colony present, but just a few hundred seen. Whistling Swan - about 150 on the refuge. Lesser Canada Geese - About 500 seen, tho there may have been others. Cackling Geese - Saw about 8000 of them. White-fronted Geese - About 5000 in refuge area. Lesser Snow Geese - At least 25,000 of them. Ross's Goose - a new life lister!! saw a few, no evident grinning patch, and could be slightly smaller than the Lesser Snow, Also a lighter call, and flight. Mallards - Over 1,000,000 ducks in the area, principally of this species, Pintails, and Baldpates. Also some Gadwalls, Green-winged Teal, several 100 Cinnamon Teal , very few Shovellers, Wood Duck, a couple Buffleheads, very few, Ruddy Ducks, about 500, I'd guess American Mergansers - about 50 of these seen, 2-1 Males OVER OVER
