November 15, 1948, Los Banos State Refuge, Merced Co. 1130-1330 PDST. Pied-billed Grebe White Pelicans - 12 or so Blue Heron American Egrets Snowy Egrets American Bittern - 1 Cackling Geese - just 7 White-fronted Geese - about 300 seen. Mallards Pintails Shovellers Redheads & Ring-necked Ducks Buffleheads Ruddy Ducks - few full males Redtail Hawks common American Roughleg Hawks - 3 seen Golden Eagle - 1 Marsh Hawks - adult M & F and imms. very common Duck Hawk - just 1 seen Sparrow Hawks - several Pheasants - 3 Virginia Rail Coots by the 1000's Sandhill Cranes - new life lister - Wendell Miller and I heard some several miles away, and when searching thru the glass picked up a flock of 40 or so circling for a landing in the area near the San Joaquin R., E of the refuge. Altogether there were at least 250 cranes in the field. Killdeer Yellowlegs Wilson Snipe - a few Least Sandpipers Flicker, Monterey D. S. Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wren singing California Shrike Audubon Warblers W. Meadowlarks Calif. Bicolor Redwings Nevada Savannah Sparrow Gambel White-crowned Sparrows Golden-crowned Sparrows.
