Stanislaus Co. 930-945 PDST Blue Herons - a couple American Egret - 1 Redtail Hawk immature Marsh Hawk F Sparrow Hawk - a couple Pheasants - close to Farmington, in irrigated area - 6-8 of them. Mourning Doves - 2 Short-eared Owl flushed from open, near-barren range, flew 1/4 mile before alighting. Horned Larks - a half dozen or so, seen only at salt lick on the range. California Shrikes on fences and wirelines along the road. W. Meadowlarks - a few Brewer Blackbird s Low hills - broad swales. Rangelands, little water in eroded arroyo September 28, 1948, Woodward Reservoir, N of Oakdale, Stanislaus Co. 10-1015 PDST Blue Heron - a couple American Egret - 2 Snowy Egret - 1 Marsh Hawk F or immature Pheasants - 8 M in lush swale, near irrigation ditch Flicker Black Phoebe Barn Swallows over reservoir California Shrike caly. Bicolor Redwings Open, rolling hills. Reservoir with 30-40' draw-down - steep sides. Merced Co. September 28, 1948, Mariposa dam site, E of LaGrand, in Mariposa County, 1330-1530 PDST Blue Heron feeding on young bullfrogs in pool in creek bed American Egrets at frog pools, too Anthony Green Heron - with Blue Heron, after frogs, I guess American Bittern - with Green and Blue herons Sparrow Hawks - several seen Killdeer - 6 or 7 on mud at edge of frog pool Wilson Snipe - 2 or 3 flushed from mud at edge of frog pool, with the killdeers California Woodpeckers - flying to and from Quercus lobata Black Phoebe - several seen on dead twigs, or in areas of small cliffs. Near water Say's Phoebes - a couple seen. California Jay - a couple seen. Others heard Western Meadowlarks - dozens seen along fences thru the range area above the dam site. Brewer Blackbirds - several in small flocks - one partial albino seen. It had 2 pair of the next-to-outer tail feathers pure white, with irregular white on the body, wings and head. September, 28, 1948, Owens Dam site, E of Planada, Merced Co., in Mariposa Co. 4-5/PDST p.m. Killdeers - a few Flicker Black Phoebe - a couple near water Say's Phoebe - a couple seen. One was very curious and while we were keying plants at the stationwagon, it flew up and hovered within 3 feet of me at eye level ! Horned Larks common X/ Horned Wren - a pair in an area of outcrop of vertically-tilted 4-6" thick strata. W. Meadowlarks - just one seen Yellow-headed Blackbird nest, looked new, 4 feet over water in Typha angustifolia. Lark Sparrows over 15 of them seen. Both adults and immatures. X/ Vesper Sparrows - 2 or 3 seen. (Poecetes graminea confinis)
