September 26, 1948, Natoma, 2 mi. W of Folsom 0845-0900 clear, N3, cool. Redtail Hawk adult and 2 immatures seen. Sparrow Hawk Black Phoebe - 2 seen California Jay Bush Tits Pallid Wren-tit Cedar Waxwing Sacramento Spotted Towhee September 26, 1948, Folsom Dam Site on the American River above Folsom, 9-1015 PDST. Vultures - scattered individuals that soon bunched in one thermal with others - 10 of them and one Redtail. The redtail made passes at a couple of them, so they headed due south in a broad front. About 2 miles south they hit another thermal where they joined more vultures. There were 27 of them in this thermal. Other individuals seen over area all morning. Cooper Hawk - one flew thru. Redtail Hawk Red-bellied Hawk - finally saw an immature one. Heavy bands on tail distinctive. Sparrow Hawks - a couple flew over the cliff by the river. Valley Quail - flushed one covey of at least 35 birds near the main ridge on the west end of the dam site. 1/4 mile on I flushed a small covey of 8 or 10 birds. Killdeer - on the gravel bars of the river. Flicker - several on the ground, and flying thru the area. California Woodpeckers - at least 5 pairs in the immediate vicinity of the dam site. Lewis Woodpecker - just one seen flying from the top of a pine. Black Phoebe - several seen - one observed to hover continuously in a hatch of mayflies over the river, taking one after another. Violet-green Swallows - several feeding back and forth in the river canyon. California Jay - a couple calling Plain Titmouse - 2 or 3 in flock with Goldfinches, Bluebirds, etc. Peck at twigs. California Bush-tits - in the mixed flock, and in flock by themselves. Pallid Wren-Tit - heard just one call. Western Bluebirds - mostly immatures in park-like area at west end of main dam site. Phainopeplas - saw 2 chasing each other between 2 live oaks. Approached within 10' of one in another live oak. Mistletoe is very scarce in this vicinity. Warbling Vireo - just one seen, after hearing it. In mixed flock mentioned above. W. Meadowlark - a couple Western Tanager - 1 female seen in live oak area. Purple Finch - immatures in mixed flock with Bluebirds and Goldfinches. House Finch - only4 seen in chaparral area at edge of live oak woodland. Green-backed Goldfinch - many in this mixed flock. Males in full plumage. Common Goldfinch - a few Sacramento Brown Towhees - seem to be running in flocks. I saw at least 20 of them. Sacramento Spotted Towhee - several seen - mostly up in live oaks to 30 feet or so. Lark Sparrow - small flock at edge of grain stubble along the road going to the dam site.
