Contd 5-7-95 - 10:15 p.m. Pied-billed grebe. Heard no owls so I gave the Boreal Owl call. Got an answer almost immediately from Birkenedge area 100' from road during a 10 minute period. I repeated this 2 more times. The call started out anxiously as a boreal owl, but ended with a series of "keeyou"s. At first they were as loud & fast as the "wattle" notes, but became progressively slower & lower in pitch, the last "keeyou" being barely audible at a distance of 50' or so. At 2 p.m. on the 18th - we gave the call again & got a similar response! We lined it up & went out to it - found a floating nest made of damp & soggy rotten sedge, etc. Tags in wet cavity, completely covered by similar rotten vegetation. Took 2 pics. Eggs a tan-buff color - very dirty. Took picture.
