Loud, for its size - made dog bark. Feb. 24, 1948, Corvallis - 12-mile Swamp 1315-1335 #/ 70° F SW 2-5 Killdeer - 7 Sparrow Hawk - 1 Audubon Warbler - 6 Brewer Blackbird - 47 Robin - 1 Pipits - 5 Meadowlark - 2 AND RETURN 1630-1620 Weather same, calm. Marsh Hawk M & F Killdeer - 4 Bluebirds - 8 Meadowlark - 4 Sparrow Hawk - 2 Robin - 3 Audubon Warbler - 7 Brewer Blackbird - 42 Juncos - 10. Feb. 24, 1948 - 12mile Swamp 1335-1600, #/ SW Calm - 5 Blue Heron - 1 flew over Lesser Canada Geese - about 500 in field at north end. 1 flew from south end. Mallards - perhaps 50 were seen. Baldpates - about 25 seen Pintails - 150-200 altogether - most females and immatures. Green-winged Teal - 40-50 seen S hoveller - 3 or 4 females or immatures and 2 full males. Ruddy Ducks - just 4 seen Hooded Mergansers - a pair seen not far from place seen last time. Cooper Hawk - 1 at south end Redtail Hawk - 1 at south end. Marsh Hawk - 1 female or immature and also one immature male. Sparrow Hawk Coots - 2-300 in area - about all there was to be seen on the open water - high. Killdeer - a couple Wilson Snipe - 1 flushed. Flicker - on ground, feeding, near grove of ash trees. Ravens - heard a couple. Crows - a few flew over. Oregon Chickadees - a few working scrub ash over swamp area. Bush Tits - about 15 in one flock in scrub ash, and spirea. Winter Wren - at south end. Seattle Wren - scolding song sparrow in fence row. Tule Wrens - there must have been 15-20 singing and scolding over the middle and north sectors of the swamp this afternoon. Some tame. Robin - a few in fields and ash trees Varied Thrush - in ash groves at south end. Bluebirds - 15-20, of which I saw at least 7 hovering at 10-15' off at the same time. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - in ash and spirea. Pipits - several flew over Shrike - just one in fence row on east side. Audubon Warblers - in oak, and ash, singular call notes. W. Meadowlark - singing Redwings - a few males seen Brewer Blackbirds - a few flew over. Purple Finch - feeding on ground at edge of water in pasture, and in ash, calling. Oregon Towhees - quite a few in fence rows. Savannah Sparrows - a few in Daucus pasture area along east side. Song Sparrows - must have seen at least 50 altogether, in fence rows around the swamp. Feb. 24, 1948 - O.S.C. Campus 9:30 p.m. A Brewer's Derved Owl giving about ½ of full call, at 10-15 sec. intervals from tall all for new bankland - about 15' up in tree. Feb. 25, 1948 - O.S.C. Campus 9 a.m. - Evening Grosbeaks, Varied Thrush 3 p.m. Townsend Warblers - 2 seen in fire, ate by "Caton Hill". They have been seen off and on in Corvallis all winter by Phil Dumas - my first ones.
