Feb. 15, 1948 - 4 miles SE of Monroe, raining, and SW wind - 1600 PST W. Crow - located another Crow flight line, and in about 5 minutes of driving I nearly paralleled the route for a while. They were gathering from the direction of Harrisburg, and flying almost due W toward the coast foothills. I saw well over 2000 birds, I would estimate, and didn't begin to see all of them. Brewer Blackbirds - a flock of 250-300 in one dirt field. Ruddy Duck at Eugene, on one of the old mili ponds. Coot, too. W. Crows - at least 300 in one young grain field - a prelim. flocking. Oregon Chickadee Golden-crowned Kinglets in tree tops-fir Winter Wren scolding, but not singing. Audubon Warbler - a couple in oaks Seattle Wren Robin Br. Blackbirds - flew over W. Bluebirds flew over Oregon Towhee singing (trill) Ruby-crowned Kinglets scolding Savannah Sparrow - in "Daucus" field Juncos - small flock in green field White-crown Sparrows - 11 in bmsh pile Song Sparrows here and there. Feb. 15, 1948, 12-mile Swamp, Bruce Station, 1430-1615, Ovc/35 Ø SW 8-15, 75-78ºF. Lesser Canadas - 500-600 in area. Mallards - perhaps 400 all told - most in field at north end, and due to strong wind, others not on open water, but in shelter of ash and spirea brush on east side. Baldpates - 10 or 15 seen Ruddy Male near bridge - just getting color. Pintails - 60-75 present, few males. Hooded Mergansers - pair lit about 50 feet Green-winged Teal - not over 8-900 seen from car on bridge - male a beauty - Shoveller - 30-40 seen, some full males stayed only a minute, and flew after a short take-off. Female breast white. Sparrow Hawk Fleasants - a few Flicker Coots - everywhere on open water - 3-400. Say's Phoebe - just one in pasture-rose area. Killdeer Tule Wren - some scolding, others singing. Wilson Snipe - 2 flushed at N end. Robin Varied Thrush - one in ash grove - on ground. W. Bluebirds - common Audubon Warblers - a few in ash, and feeding Pipits - several small flocks overhead. on gravel in road - close company N.W. Shrike - in fence row - watched it with the W. Bluebirds. hover at 20' for at least 50 seconds, uttering call notes at same time. W. Meadowlarks singing NW Redwings - several "kokalee-ing". Purple Finch imms in same ash tree. Oregon Towhees common - Oregon Juncos in brush and fence rows - Song Sparrows.
