May 27, 1947, 12-mile Swamp, and Faling Eastate Swamp, 1 mile west 1 - 4 p.m. Blue Heron flew over swamp Vultures here and there Sharp-shinned Hawk flew over Redtail Hawks - one pair circled constantly over one butte-like hill, and were observed in courting acts once. Sparrow Hawk - hovering over a field Bobwhite - heard Pheasant - saw a few roosters Virginia Rail - located another pair in the Faling Swamp, which had young up to 3 or 4 inches in size. Both parents stayed close by. Couldn't catch young. Mallards - a few, and one female Pintail - flushed one bird Wood Duck - heard one Hooded Merganser - saw 4 young (of this species?) on the Faling swamp above the dam. Kildeer Band-tailed Pigeons - 4 flushed from ground near dry old creek bed Mourning Doves - seen in the gravel road Vaux Swift - 5 over the Faling swamp Rufous Hummingbird - at the " " Little Flycatcher - heard several and saw one Horned Lark - singing and sailing at height of over 300 feet above ground Violet-green Swallows - a few Tree Swallows - quite common today Barn Swallows - several seen. The nest still has 5 eggs in it. Cliff Swallows - dipping into the swamp near the bridge W. Crow - several heard and seen. Oregon Chickadee - heard and seen Tule Wren - heard at 12-mile Swamp Robin - a few seen Russet-backed Thrush - Dave heard one Cassin Vireo - several heard Yellow Warbler - a few seen Pacific Yellowthroat - one nest in Rosa nutkana along fence row from the swamp, at 1 1/2 ft. Long Tailed Chat - quite a few heard in the areas on the Faling Swamp. Meadowlark - flew over us, singing lustily NW Reewings - abundant at Faling Swamp. Found one clutch of 5 eggs at 12-mile, Also another of 4 fresh eggs, and a new nest at 6 feet in open top of Spirea. Brewer Blackbirds - common Lazuli Bunting - two males and one female seen Willow Goldfinch - a flock of 20 or 25 seen on the way back to town. Oregon Towhee May 28, 1947, Corvallis: Robin nest with 4 young ready to leave in 4 days - nest at 7 1/2 feet in Hazel, in lawn area between two houses. Exposed to the south, and the entire area. Robin nest in Cherry tree at 15 feet, on a limb running SE, nest shaded by immediate leaves and twigs, but no other shade E,S, or W. Calif. Purple Finch - 2 pair were perched on one of the cornices of the Library - 7 p.m.
