Bluebirds - a few seen Cedar Waxwings Cassin Vireo Lutescent Warbler Brewer Blackbirds 633 May 22, 1947, Noti Bog, 5 mi. NW of Noti, Lane Co., 1040 a.m. to 330 p.m. Few birds in the bog area, itself; Vultures - soared over the area Ruffed Grouse - flushed several at close range in the "ditch" around the bog, but could find no sign of nests in this dense vegetation. Mountain Quail - 2 flew from the gravel road near here. Rufous Hummingbirds - saw 2 females, but no males Harris Woodpeckers - a pair had a nest in a dead 7" D. Fir snag, in a second-growth open area near where we ate out lunch. It was on the NE side at 22 feet. Little Flycatcher Violet-green Swallows Cliff Swallows Coast Jay Tuke Wren in the dense Ledum growth of the bog, tho there was little free water. Russet-backed Thrush Cassin Vireo Lutescent Warbler Yellow Warblers Pacific Yellowthroats around the border of the bog. Evening Grosbeaks flew over Western Tanagers - their "pittcock" call was common everywhere Lazuli Bunting at edge of pasture near the bog. Towhee Junco - a pair had a nest we couldn't locate, near the bog, in open D. Fir. White-crowned Sparrows in fence row by the road. 634 May 24, 1947, Santiam River, Foster Bridge - 730-830 a.m. Mountain Quail - calling single notes from both sides of the river. Spotted Sandpiper rs - a pair on a bar above the bridge. Had a nest that we could not locate. Band-tailed Pigeons - a pair in a D. Fir clump of 5 trees, near an old orchard, where they were probably attracted to feed on cherries. Olive-sided Flycatchers - two calling Stellar Jays - 4 or 5 seen and heard. Oregon Chickadee - a pair with a nest on the NW side of a dead fir snag at 30 feet on an open south slope. Bluebird nest in same sang. Western Bluebird - a pair with a nest at 18 feet on the E side of a dead fir snag on an open south slope. Chickadee nest in same snag. Cassin Vireo - a couple heard. Western Tanagers - a few heard. 635 Cascadia State Park, Santiam River, May 24, 1947, 9 to 1030 a.m. Kingfisher flew by Flicker a few on the open flat at edge of Dobbin Creek Black Phoebe - Phil and I were walking d own the west side of Dobbin Creek, under the bridge, looking for Rana boylii when I heard this birds call, and I immediately spotted it perched in the shade on the north limbs of an alder above the creek, below the bridge. It was preening its feathers, and did have the feathers wet, as if it had just been bathing in the creek. It did not call any more while we watched. I got Dr. Gordon, who also got to see it at 30 feet with 8X binocs. There is no question about the identity. Plumage was not a truly jet black, so it may have been an immature, or a female. Outer tail feathers may have been lighter??? OVER OVER 636
