5. As near as I can tell at a distance, these seemed to be dark in color and their heads seemed to have many markings. They did not have a narrow duck head, but more of a Buffle-head type of head. 6. I take these by this name because the bill of the bird seemed to be puffed up in front of the point of joining with the head of the bird. They seemed to be all black except for a narrow white wing patch when folded, and it showed up quite a bit more when the bird flew. It spent most of its time in a sheltered cove riding the swells and diving under for short periods of time. 7. Just to mention this Chink because it was on the lawn in front of the Memorial Union Bldg. in Corvallis when we left at 5:30 this morning. It was a rooster. 8. This sea lion was just out to sea from the islands where the Cormorants, Herring Gulls, Phalaropes etc. were located. It seemed to be palying in the water-- It would raise half out of the water, dive under or into a breaker and float up on the other side. The birds I saw for the first time were Cormorant, Herring Gull, Phalarope, and a large band of small sea birds that we didn't get a good glimpse of. They were white bengath.
