Kuria Atoll, Gilbert Islands
myself but since we were in no hurry
I made nothing of it aloud. Cataloguing
and reading filled out the evening.
Nov 18 After breakfast all of us went
in, Brian and [illegible] Larry to the
more northern and less inhabited island
(Oncaka?) for collecting, the rest
to Kuria. Phil & George headed north
to survey while Roger & I went to
the pond to check it out again. There
was very little there this time so
we went out to the end of the island
and looked up the east shore. We
could see Whanuka still in the distance,
finding nothing promising we headed
back along the west beach, collecting
shrubids on the way. Roger handed
the gun to me and I found out why
after collecting 3 plovers. Those 12
[gauge] magnums really slammed my
shoulder, probably due to not holding
the gun right.
We walked back through the village,
our happy gun-coaching thing in tow.
On the way we met Chris and Ray
who had been treated to dance
performance by the children, grew white
