17) Local guide. We saw no cuckoos but
I got another 'life' bird instead,
a tentative Pacific Pigeon which Larry
collected out of a palm tree. In
contrast to the Noddies, the pigeon
sits 1-2' away from the base of the
leaf; rather conspicuous. Some noddies
and Fairy Terns were also collected.
Only, Ruddy Turnstones (200+), Golden
Plaier (50-85), and Tattlers (15-20) were
present at the pond, which was
salt water over much like that around
the lagoon at Hangaon. Not watching
where I was going, I went in it up
to my knees - pleasant!
We went on back to the raft and
decided to head back to the ship.
Binion, Larry, Roger & myself went
in one raft carrying four natives,
village officials I guess, who wanted
to see the cinema aboard. They
directed us to follow a channel since
the tide was much lower than when
we had arrived. Larry again insisted
we were wasting time by not
running a straight course to the
ship. When we took a canoe in
tow at one turn I became suspicious
