B. Amman 1964 Marania Ktoll, Gilbert Islands was to enable the partners to follow each other perfectly and maintain pitch, which they did superbly. The song they had sung had been a love song written about 30 years before. It and all such songs composed today are written in the old language which has been out of use for about 50 years. A rather old man sang another love song in a slightly different style. Next, several dances were performed. The police chief, a rotund fellow in a red sarong who reminded me of Jackie Gleason, did a waltz "dance" while seated, with his legs covered by a mat. The words and motions peeded up as it went and the chief was obviously enjoying himself. Then 2 couples sat together in a square and went through a hand-slapping dance which got more and more hectic and mixed-up as it proceeded. Finally, 12 people formed two rows facing each other and executed a stick dance, clicking sticks with any of the three people opposite them. This also provided everyone with much fun & laughter.
