K. Amerman 1964 Jalint Atoll, Marshall Is. the White-fronted Tern (Sterna striata) from Australia-New Zealand. The island differs from any we have yet seen. The main plants were the lean-like vine and a yellow composite, and coconut and Merserschmidia. The seaward side contained the only Bemphis, in good amounts. Other plants included Pandanus, Scaevola (very little), bread fruit, two grasses, several vines and shrubs. The forest was not very dense but the undergrowth, especially, the lean-like vine, formed very dense tangles. Returned to the ship after supper. Nov. 11 Rogers Phil went off in a small boat painted to resemble a shark to visit two islands with lagoons in hopes of turning up ducks & shorebirds. The rest of us set out in an old whaleboat (according to Dad Feather, an authentic one, lightly prized on the west coast) with Billy (?), Alex, Daniel and another native, for Hiperon where the Marshallese report [illegible] Frigates. We arrived there about noon after a 2 1/2 hour run (20 miles).
