John Davis 1941. June 30. Daytona Beach, Volusia Co., Florida Sibley and I drove to Jacksonville (180 miles round trip) and each bought a new gun. Returned home about 3:30 P.M. July 1. Packed the truck preparatory to leaving Daytona Beach. However, an act officer of the insurance company has to see us about the stolen equipment before we can leave. This now 6:00 P.M. and no insurance man. So we will have to stay at least until tomorrow. July 2. Contacted insurance company. We then left Daytona Beach, went south & west through Deland, Sanford, and Apopka, camping at a point 2 mi. SW Orlando, Orange Co., Florida. Camped in a typical pine-oak-palmetto flat. Set a few traps. July 3. Caught 2 Heromyscus, probably floridanus. Collected Southern Meadowlark, Carolina Chickadee, Flicker, and immature Blue Warbler. Drove on south to Okeechobee, Okeechobee Co., Florida. Drove north and west of town, then made a triangle, returned to Okeechobee. The land is mostly open grass and palmetto. Saw Florida Duck, Florida Crane, Limpkin, Burrowing Owl, and Audubon Caracara. Water Moccasins (Agkistrodon piscivorus) were quite common along the roads by drainage canals.
