Boqueron, Mpio. Motozintla, Chiapas, Mexico
June 22 Yesterday, went shopping for food in morning while Ernie + Jorge got our flat tire + broken black camper repaired. Left Motozintla around 14:00 and drove to Pijijiil. Tried to drive the rented 4x4 truck into Boqueron, but the road was very muddy and was under repair, and we got to a point <1km in where we had to turn back. 3 local guys helped drive/push me out + uphill; took ~1 hr. Found a guy on the Guatemalan side of Pijijiil who drove us to Boqueron for MXN400 per trip; road was really bad. Saw a female respondent greet + an owl on the way in.
Set up in the community meeting hall - a big improvement over our camp on Cerro Mazatl. This morning, Jorge, Sean, I + d set out at 09:40 w/ a guide (Julian Perez) + 2 small children. We walked up the trail to Cerro Boqueron and found a Thamnophis fulvus out near a stream or a little waterfall just outside of town. Collected 8 Cordia rassulus (and saw many more) along the bank next to the trail in disturbed habitat. The side of Cerro Boqueron facing town is almost entirely deforested. Our guide found 2 Hoplophorus next to the trail, and we saw a green Salpasa.
We went uphill until the edge of the forest, then down a short distance to a small stream. There were many rotten logs and our guide immediately found a big Basiliscus franklini maydenae on one. We went on to get 1 more under a log, 1 inside a log, and 2 under bark. These look almost like B. madeirensis to me; adults seem entirely black, while juveniles have a few yellowish spots along sides. They look more like B. franklini from Cerro Mazatl than those we've seen in San Marcos, Guatemala, but the spots are less range than on Cerro Mazatl.
